Llanfihangel Rhydithon Eco school began again in 2015, shortly after we applied for our Green flag accreditation as the school had already achieved bronze and silver accreditation some time before our kids started in Dolau.
The Eco school has gone from strength to strength. When we began we started as an after school club so that all children could participate. Last year we created a new Eco school committee complete with Chairman, vice chairman, secretary, press reporter and trips and activities officer discussed at our AGM. This format and meeting at lunch times this has worked much better.
Every year at the beginning of the autumn term, we sit down carry out an Environmental audit of different aspects of school life. These include Biodiversity, Energy, Global citizenship, Healthy living, Litter, Marine world, School Grounds, Transport, Waste, Water.
We then list the topics we are doing well on and what we could be doing better. We look at topics for our action plan.
Last years was probably the best action plan yet, the children were full of enthusiasm. We had a lot of activates planned for each part of the school, including a beach clean up day with conservation volunteers in Ceredigion.
We had our second Green flag award in December 2019. The Eco schools officer from Keep Wales Tidy comes out to visit after the Coordinator completes the application form based on the evidence gathered throughout the two years since the last visit and evaluates how we have been doing and whether get to keep our green flag status. We were successful once again.
Covid unfortunately ruined our plans for 2020-21. but the children did home learning on Eco topics, which we will use to demonstrate what we have been doing at our next accreditation visit in December 2021.
The children have done serval pieces of work that could go towards an action plan for this year and Eco schools Wales have emailed through several resources that we could use to help.
